How oil and gas industry start adopting HCL for acidizing treatments?

Since roughly 120 years ago, oil and gas producers have increased well productivity via acid treatment (acidizing). Acidizing predates all other well stimulation techniques, including hydraulic fracturing, which were not developed until the late 1940s. However, the use of acidizing was restricted until the early 1930s due to a lack of effective acid corrosion inhibitors to guard the steel tubulars in the wells. With the development of effective corrosion inhibitors, the use and further development of acid treatment (acidizing) of oil and gas wells has proliferated, leading to the establishment of the well stimulation services industry.

Today, acidizing is one of the most widely used and effective means available to oil and gas operators for improving the productivity (stimulation) of wells. Acidizing is commonly performed on new wells to maximise their initial productivity and on ageing wells to restore productivity and maximise the recovery of their energy resources.

Different applications of HCL in Oil & Gas Industry

  • 1. Acidizing involves pumping acid into a geological structure or wellbore that can produce oil and/or gas. Any acidizing process aims to increase a well's productivity or injectivity. The three major categories of acid treatments are matrix acidizing, fracture acidizing, and acid washing.

  • 2. Tubular and wellbore cleaning is the only goal of acid washing. Treatment of the formation is not intended. Acid washing, which removes scale (such as calcium carbonate), rust, and other debris obstructing well flow, is most frequently done with hydrochloric acid (HCL) mixes. Formation procedures include matrix and fracture acidizing.

  • 3. Under the formation fracturing pressure, acid is introduced during matrix acidizing. Acid is poured above the formation fracturing pressure during fracture acidizing.

  • 4. By dissolving obstructions in the productive formation that are obstructing flow, or by dissolving the formation rock itself to improve already-existing flow routes to the wellbore, matrix or fracture acidizing aims to restore or increase an oil or gas well's productivity. When planning an acid job, two key factors dominate the treatment selection and design process: formation type - carbonate, sandstone, or shale; and formation permeability, or the ability of fluid to move naturally through the structure.

  • 5. Acid stimulation of oil and gas production wells when the productivity is reduced due to precipitation and blockage of the critical area of formation with inorganic matters and due to oil-water emulsions.

  • 6. Improving the injectivity in injection wells when the injectivity was affected by formation plugging with rust precipitation, suspended solids in injected water, or precipitation formed as a result of incompatibility of salts in injection.
