General description:

Sorbitol less commonly known as Glucotrol is a sugar alcohol with a sweet taste. It can be obtained by reduction of glucose. Sorbitol is commercially available in liquid/syrup and crystal/powder form. Because of its sweet taste, it is widely used as a partial replacement for sucrose. It is non-cariogenic and Humectant in nature, has only about two-thirds the calories of sugar.

Application & Usage:

  • It is often used in diet foods (including diet drinks and ice cream), mints, cough syrups, and sugar-free chewing gum.
  • Sorbitol often is used in mouthwash and toothpaste.
  • Some transparent gels can be made only with sorbitol, as it has a refractive index sufficiently high for transparent formulations.
